Here are some Powershell scripts I wrote as a workaround. Previously we set up WDS to install Windows 7 on a laptop automatically, after booting from the network.

The objective was to be able to build lots of laptops from a standard image, with a minimum of interaction. Inside, we used the Microsoft-Windows-UnattendedJoin component in the specialize phase to join the domain automatically. Our policy shown above means that if we use our process to build a brand new laptop, the next computer name in the series will be chosen: V , then V and so on.

If a laptop is rebuilt, the hardware ID is recognised, the same computer name is applied and the computer object in AD re-used. This makes it possible, for example, to put a sticker on the laptop showing the computer name, which the user can read and quote to us if they need support. No matter how many times we re-image the machine, the computer name never changes. I struggled for ages to get the approach above to work, now the time has come to deploy Windows 10 to our users. I could see the automatic domain join was successful in the specialize phase, but the computer name was then being renamed in OOBE which comes last, without also renaming the AD computer object.

That was breaking the join. I found a workaround. Crucially, this happens just before the automatic domain join. Curiously, the names chosen have a slightly different form e. The automatic domain join will now stay joined. Unfortunately, the machine name is still random. In the end I gave up trying to get WDS to do the automatic domain join on Windows 10 via the imageunattend.

The 1st script is below. It reads the system serial number and renames the computer as that. On our Lenovo laptops, the serial is 7 or 8 characters which works well. This means the computer name is always the same for any given laptop. After the rename, a reboot is needed. So, ahead of that, the 1st script schedules a 2nd script to fire at the next restart, so the 2nd script can pick up afterwards.

SerialNumber -force -restart. Then it schedules a 3rd script. The domain join is now done. The script needs access to domain credentials to enable this. For good measure, this is erased after use. I found that renaming first, then rebooting, then doing the domain join solves that problem. Finally, the 3rd script runs which activates Bitlocker. We have group policy set so the recovery password is saved in the computer object.
